Digimon Season 2 Review

Season 2

Humans from left to right: Cody, Yolei, Davis, Kari, and T.K.
Digimon from left to right: Armadillomon, Hawkmon, Veemon, Gatomon, Patamon
Four years have passed since the events of season one and three new Digi-Destined and partner Digimon are introduced: Davis, Cody and Yolei and partners Veemon, Armadillomon and Hawkmon, respectively. The three new Digi-Destined, as well as a grown up T.K. and Kari (Tai's younger sister), are given new Digivices called a D3 and communicators called D-Terminals. The new Digivices now allow them to open a portal to the digital world from any computer in the real world.

This season also introduces a new kind of evil, in human form. The human calls himself the "Digimon Emperor" and uses his own creation called "Dark Rings" to enslave the Digimon. The kids also learn that the Digimon Emperor is building control spires all throughout the digital world in order to prevent the Digimon from digivolving. The new Digi-Destined manage to destroy their first control spire with the help of Matt and the Champion-level Garurumon. It's now clear to the kids that they must destroy the rest of the control spires if they ever hope to defeat the Digimon Emperor. The older generation Digi-Destined continue to help the new kids to overcome their challenges.

Mention here how the partner digimon are introduced to them in their rookie level versus season one where they were introduced in-training level. Also mention how they were "born" and how the same crests that were associated with the older generations are now being associated with the new digi-destined. Mention the Davis sex joke.

Digi-Armor

Veemon Digi-Armor Digivolving into Flamedramon

Remember when I said there were different forms of digivolving? Well, since the Digimon can't digivolve, the series introduces Digi-Armor in the form of a Digi-Egg (not to be confused with the lowest level of digivolution). Each Digi-Egg has the mark of a crest that corresponds to each of the new Digi-Destined. If you haven't guessed it yet, that also includes T.K. and Kari. After the new Digi-Destined discover their first Digi-Egg they awaken their new partners. It allows their partner to Digi-Armor Digivolve into a stronger form equivalent in power to a Champion-level Digimon. Pretty cool huh?

Impressions

The new Digi-Armor really threw me off but it was refreshing to see a new kind of Digivolution after having seen the same animations countless times before. If you missed the old way to digivolve then don't worry, the Digimon eventually regain their ability to digivolve without the help of their Digi-Armor. Which reminds me, the opening song is the same from season one and after 50+ episodes of the same song I was very disappointed there wasn't a slightly modified version.

I was really pleased to see that a human was now considered an enemy. It opens up the children to a new kind of evil that isn't as easy to deal with as before. For example, the Digi-Destined could easily just defeat the evil Digimon and delete them but now we're talking about more than just data, we're talking about another human just like the Digi-Destined. So how do you deal with an enemy like this...? And how exactly did this human enter the digital world...? All this and more is answered in Season 2 of Digimon: Digital Monsters!
